Membership changes to the Special Areas Board

Membership on the four-member appointed Board changed this past April with the departure of Daryl Swenson as representative for Special Area No. 3. Board members serve four-year terms, with terms overlapping to support continuity in the governance body.

“I want to thank Daryl for his exemplary leadership and commitment to the people of Special Areas over his ten years on the Board. Daryl was always able to maintain a very pragmatic approach to problems, while also being able to take advantage of unexpected opportunities. During the 2017 wildfire which deeply affected the entire Bindloss community, Daryl was tireless in his support for his community despite being personally impacted. Daryl was a strong supporter of regional projects and was not afraid to try new approaches, including the Oyen rail development. Thank you, Daryl, for your exceptional leadership and commitment!” — Jordon Christianson, Chair

Daryl has been a part of Special Areas Advisory Council since 2004 and served for ten years as a Board member representing Special Area No. 3. Although Daryl’s appointment to the Special Areas Board has now expired, he continues to serve as the locally elected representative for Special Area 2 – Subdivision 7.

“I want to thank Advisory Council for trusting me to represent Special Area No. 3 on the Board these past ten years. One of the things I will miss most is getting the chance to work with other Board members and senior administration on such a regular basis. My time on the board gave me a new appreciation for the sheer size of Special Areas, and the diversity of lands and challenges we find here. I was always so impressed with the depth and variety of knowledge around the board table, no matter what the issue we were looking at. We may not have always seen eye-to-eye on every issue, but at the end of the day, we all worked together to find solutions that best served all of Special Areas.” — Daryl Swenson, Advisory Councillor

With Daryl’s term on the Board ending, Kevin Wilson was selected by Advisory Council to represent Special Area 3 on the Board. Kevin has served on Advisory Council since 2013, representing Special Area 3 – Subdivision 6. Kevin and his family operate a large cattle operation in the Cereal area of over 12,000 acres and 500 cattle. Passionate about making sure communities have high-quality healthcare and local education opportunities, Kevin brings a broad perspective from his work representing Special Areas on various boards and committees throughout the region.

Advisory Council is planning to meet early this summer; the Special Areas Board meets twice a month.
