Viva Vitality: Recreation and Parks Month

By Laura Lukye

“June is Recreation and Parks Month” (JRPM) as recognized by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA). JRPM highlights the many benefits that recreation and parks bring to our communities and acknowledges the strong foundation of parks and recreation facilities and programs in Alberta. Parks and recreation are essential to our well-being. Parks create a place to interact and meet new people and provide space for events and to engage in recreational activities. Parks, and the activities within them, help develop a sense of community.  JRPM is a great opportunity to not only celebrate the benefits of recreation and parks but also the many ways people can participate in recreation and parks, and the diverse careers available in the sector.

Not only do we #celebrateJRPM in June, we also celebrate National Indigenous History Month, National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), Pride Month, Adaptive Inclusive Recreation Week (June 18 - 23), and more.

Celebrate JRPM inspired by these weekly themes:

  • June 4 – 10: Get Outside & Get Active!

  • June 11 – 17: Connecting With the Land

  • June 18 – 23: Adaptive Inclusive Recreation

  • June 25 – 30: Explore Your Community

Join ARPA and celebrate JRPM with some exciting activities and contests that are designed to get you, your friends, family, coworkers, and community outside and active. Learn more at arpaonline.ca.
