William Benjamin Lockhart

1928 - 2024

William Benjamin, “Ben” Lockhart, 95, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024 at the Big Country Hospital, LTC in Oyen, AB.

Ben was born to Stuart and Lucy Lockhart in Oyen, AB Dec.18, 1928. Ben was raised in the Oyen area, took his first 7 years of schooling in Oyen, and when he moved to Big Stone he completed his education, staying half way through Grade 8. He said he probably would have stayed longer if brother Bryan would have. He worked with his Dad on a dray line in Oyen as well as farming and ranching at Big Stone. He also worked with Jim Ball moving buildings and with Cec Mansfield at the Utilities and the movie theatre in the late 40’s.

After a short courtship, Ben married the love of his life Vera Weller in March of 1954, and they started life in Big Stone. He was a jack-of-all-trades and made the best of what he had, relying on an exceptional work ethic. Ben was an amazing husband and father. He loved to help out his kids, grandkids, neighbors and anyone else who needed it. He loved farming and ranching and enjoyed flying, playing cards, camping, golfing, skiing and woodworking. He was very community oriented and served many years on many different boards.

Ben was predeceased by Vera, sons Douglas and Blaine, brothers Fred and Bryan, grandson Clint and granddaughter Danielle.

Ben is survived by his children Darcy (Linda) Lockhart, Brad (Sandy) Lockhart, Cindy (Pat) Klassen and Sheldon Lockhart. He was blessed with 15 grandchildren and their spouses and 31 great grandchildren : sister Sharon Thygeson, sister-in-law Doreen Lockhart, brother-in-law’s Bob (Julie) Weller and Ken (Lorraine) Weller and numerous nieces and nephews.
