Oyen Students Publish Paper

OYEN,  June 29, 1942 – At the beginning of the school term the students of the Oyen high school organized a students’ union and decided to publish a paper with the following officers in charge: editor in chief, Gordon Gibson; assistant editor, Beth Gibson; printing manager, Kenneth Munroe; business manager, Bertha Lee; circulation manager, Gordon Kraemer; gossip column, Bill Cunningham.

The students solicited subscriptions, and now boast 112 paid-up subscribers. A name contest for the paper was sponsored, and Mrs. W. Cunningham and Mrs. Gordon Hartwick were successful contestants, both submitting the name “Oyen Echo,” for which they received a year’s subscription free.

Local business people assisted the students by advertising. Members of the students’ union took turns in writing editorials, news items, poems, and advertising. Red Cross notes were published free of charge. Mavis McArthur turned in some very fine work in the capacity of cartoonist.

COPIES TO SERVICEMEN

The names and addresses of all soldiers, sailors, and airmen from the community serving both in Canada and overseas were obtained and a free copy of each issue was sent to each one.

The Oyen Echo is published twice monthly. The paper has been a new enterprise for the students. It has given them experience in writing articles, typing, and printing; and while the publication of the paper will be suspended during the holiday months of July and August, it is hoped that with the beginning of the fall term the effort will be continued.
