Sibbald News: Sibbald Games was a very busy weekend

By Lee Switzer

Well hockey is winding down, the skating carnival is over but dance festivals are kicking into high gear. March and April weekends, and other times, are filled with dancers dancing their hearts out showing all the hard work that the year of training has produced.

Spring is definitely in the air. The sound of geese returning, lots of birds chirping in the morning and much longer daylight hours are delightful. Ranchers are preparing the calving areas and starting to check the heifers. Snow is forecast for this week. Fingers crossed as March snow brings moisture to the dry conditions.

Sibbald Community Hall was a busy place last Saturday, March 16. Eight teams competed in a variety of fun, and very challenging games. Participants came in their team colours and loads of St Paddy’s gear. Folks came from near and far including; Hoosier, Marengo, Flaxcombe, Alsask, Acadia Valley, Oyen, Sibbald and Medicine Hat. It was great fun watching each of you compete with huge smiles, lots of laughs, and loads of team spirit. Thank you so much for coming out and supporting our small community when it was a very busy weekend.

Local ranchers donated homegrown beef for a delicious roast beef supper. The ladies of the community donated the trimmings and wonderful desserts that the members of the Food Committee whipped into a fabulous meal enjoyed by all.

The evening was completed with music from the band Prairie Dogz. Lots of dancing and visiting took place. Local area businesses also sponsored the cost of the band which was very generous.

Something like this doesn’t just happen, but took weeks of preparation and lots of personal energy poured into thinking of the games and creating the items needed for the games. Volunteers ran the games with clipboards and great organizational skills. Thanks to some of our older youth who helped run the events, stepped in to help some teams in certain events, and for awesome clean up help. Bar Committee filled everyone’s refreshments; served with smiles and friendly visits.

Clean up on Sunday was quick and efficient with lots of hands working together. You’ll notice I didn’t include names in this write up. I was nervous I would miss someone and wanted to express what a great job our little community can do as we work together!

Easter is just a blink away. May your Easter be filled with faith, family and food, with a few chocolate treats being thrown in for good measure. Take care everyone.
